Four Types of Checks for All Aircraft

Written on November 30, 2007 by TC

How often are airplanes inspected and checked for safety? With so much reliance on complex avionics equipment such as Miscellaneous Antenna and Waveguide Avionics Devices, it’s a valid question to ask. There are actually four different types of aircraft maintenance checks that are done periodically on all aircraft operated by airlines.

The four types of checks are designated as A through D, depending on how light or heavy the check is. A and B checks are often done overnight at airport gates. A checks are done about once a month, and B checks are done about once every 3 months. How often checks are done depends on how many hours the plane has flown and how many takeoffs and landings or “cycles” have been completed, among other things.

The two types of heavier checks are done at a maintenance facility as they require in depth inspection. C checks are done every 12 to 18 months and D checks are done every 4 to 5 years.

This system of regularly scheduled checks is designed to keep aircraft safe for flying. Miscellaneous Measurement and Test Devices Avionics technicians rely on ensure avionics components and systems are working correctly. These checks are all system-wide, and none of them are limited to a check of Interconnectors Avionics parts or any other single type of component or system. The D check is the most comprehensive and involves almost a complete disassembly, inspection, and reassembly of the entire plane.
